Formal assessment and diagnosis

To obtain a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder, your child should be evaluated by a pediatric neurologist, licensed clinical psychologist, developmental pediatrician or psychiatrist. Adult diagnoses are usually done by a psychiatrist, but not all psychiatrists diagnose autism, so you will need to call ahead or contact your insurance company for a referral.

Once an official diagnosis has been made, a detailed assessment should outline your child’s assets and deficits plus recommendations for services. This assessment is crucial in determining first steps and needs for your child. Important traditional therapies should begin as soon as possible. TACA can assist with referrals for providers that are TACA “parent approved” in your area. You will likely need a formal diagnosis to obtain insurance coverage for services.
