Other: Siblings cannot be forgotten
Being a sibling of a high needs child can be tough. It's a delicate balancing act that parents have to perform every day to make sure everyone gets what the need.
Driving evaluations and lessons can make or break this step in independence. For most teenagers, driving a car is a rite of passage; many are eager to get their licenses. Unfortunately, not all kids with ASD can operate a car safely. It can be difficult to explain to higher-functioning kids that driving is not a right, it’s a privilege, and that being behind the wheel of a 3,000-pound killing machine is a very serious thing. Know that Vocational Rehabilitation can provide driving evaluations and pay for driving lessons if need be.
There are many great books on and for Teens and Adults with ASD that cover the gamut of topics.
