G’s Story: It’s All in the Eyes
October 23, 2012
We didn’t expect our pediatrician to tell us she thought our infant son’s problems were signs of autism. But we are glad she did: in that moment she added precious months – maybe years – to his intervention.
Determined to change the course of this disease, we learned that appropriate medical treatments, combined with highly individualized behavioral intervention and other appropriate therapies, could be powerfully effective, and we launched a combined biomedical and therapeutic approach before he was two. As his health problems were addressed using evidence-based treatments, he began sleeping and eating well. This enhanced his ability to pay attention, and his speech, OT and behavioral therapies became dramatically more effective.
Half a decade later, he continues to make progress every day and embodies the precious truth about this disease: autism is treatable. It’s written all over his face.
