Please join us as we walk together in the VISITOR INDUSTRY CHARITY WALK!

Saturday, May 17, 2014

The 36th Annual CHARITY WALK on Oahu will take place on: SATURDAY, MAY 17, 2014 @ 7:00 AM (Breakfast begins at 5:30 am, Pre-Walk Activities at 6:30 am)!
Where: McCOY PAVILION’S KEY HOLE AREA at ALA MOANA BEACH PARK. All walkers must be walking by 7:00 am!!!

The Charity Walk is one of our favorite fundraisers for TACA HI! The money raised from those who walk comes back to TACA HI and tells the Walk Grant Committee how committed our families are to support this organization! Monies raised from this fundraiser go to carry on our TACA HI programs, support, educational opportunities, and family events. We all want more family events this year!!

Anyone can walk! Please invite your family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, clients, schools, and clubs to join TACA Hawaii and walk to support our programs during a morning of fun, food, entertainment, and a little exercise. This is a fun event for the whole family to join in on! To participate, each walker must raise $35 ($25 for those under 18 years old – including infants. Each walker, including infants, must fill out a registration form. You can get this from TACA HI. Remember to keep track of your donations.

This year, we have a TACA Hawaii page you can create to help ask donors to support you & your family in the Walk.
Please visit http://hawaii.tacanow.org/2014/charitywalk/ and create a team. This will be a little different than a Family & Friends page as this all funds collected here will be sent to accompany your registration in the walk. Your minimum goal can be the amount needed to register your group or family. For example, the Pennington Family minimum goal would be $155 – Mom & Dad &70 ($35 each) plus Son $35 (just turned 18 years old) plus 2 little kids $50 ($25 each)! Your goal can be higher! Remember ALL funds go toward running our TACA Hawaii chapter. This year we are working to raise money to continue our TACA efforts and also to provide more family events this year!!!

Research notes that a social impairment is a key diagnostic indicator of autism spectrum disorders. Treatment programs which target peer interactions are necessary to develop the skills for maintaining conversation, taking perspectives, playing appropriately, controlling emotional expression, negotiating conflict, and experiencing intimacy. Without these experiences in childhood, establishing a positive adult experience is difficult.

To address this need TACA Hawaii in conjunction with the Creative Connections Foundation pleased to offer a 8-week semi-structured social group for adolescents with High functioning autism spectrum disorders. Children will receive a 120-minute bi-weekly therapeutic group targeting specific and developmentally appropriate social skills. They will also have an opportunity to generalize their skills in natural community settings.

TACA Hawaii Parent Support Line

Talk About Curing Autism (TACA) is pleased to announce the extension of its services in Hawaii to now offer the TACA Hawaii parent support line. This program will allow families and caregivers to call TACA parent support staff for Hawaii specific information on resources and support as they navigate their own personal autism journey. The TACA Hawaii phone line will utilize current TACA resources along with Hawaii specific information in providing assistance to family members. Hawaii families will now be able to call locally for support and resources – furthering TACA’s mission to educate, empower and support families affected by autism. Our goal is to provide Hawaii families a quick and effective way to connect to resources and move forward in accessing services and support for their child affected by autism and family.

TACA Hawaii’s parent support line will begin taking calls on November 15, 2013. Messages left during time of high call volume or non-operating hours will be returned within 24 – 48 hours. Families can call TACA’s toll free line at 855-726-7810 to be directed to TACA Hawaii parent support line staff.

How TACA Helps Hawaii Families

TACA does not charge admission to the meetings, nor does it assess annual membership fees for families it supports. Meetings feature:

  • Free TACA Autism Journey Guides (over 750 pages of collective knowledge gathered from experienced paraprofessionals and parents) are offered to all parents who are attending their first Chapter meeting.
  • Speakers on topics ranging from traditional therapies, integrated medical treatments, education, and legal support.
  • TACA's Parent Mentors - one-on-one access to experienced families who have successfully navigated the challenges of finding appropriate treatments and educational opportunities for their children, and who receive additional education from TACA's Foundation Office.
