Speaker: Shannon Kendall

This presentation examines three sensory-cognitive functions—concept imagery, phonemic awareness and symbol imagery—which affect language processing skills including comprehension and reading. Decoding, spelling or comprehension difficulties may be the result of weaknesses in these underlying sensory-cognitive functions. The talk will focus particularly on concept imagery and its role in language processing. Imagery is a critical factor in cognition and language comprehension. It is the sensory input that connects us to the language that we hear and the language that we read. Research and case studies will be presented that illustrate how concept imagery ability can be improved and have an effect on vocabulary, and oral and written comprehension.
