LA/SFV CHAPTER MEETING
Becoming an Empowered Advocate
September 7, 2014
- Time: 4:00 - 7:00 PM
- Location: Burbank First United Methodist Church
700 N. Glenoaks Ave.
Burbank, CA 91502
Speaker: Lynne Arnold
Although parents are the most important members of the IEP team and know far more about their child’s challenges and abilities, they often feel at a disadvantage and outgunned at IEP meetings. How can they begin to leverage their in-depth knowledge of the child into effective advocacy? The key to unlocking effective advocacy is is understanding the critical fundamentals of documentation, using a strategy of specificity, deconstructing challenges, realizing the roles of professionals involved with their child and simply becoming an organized advocate with a focused mission. This presentation is all about empowering the inner advocate with easy-to-undertand tips and strategies for parents of kids affected by autism.
Lynne Arnold is the mother of two teens – a daughter and a son recovering from autism. Through conference presentations, writings and mentoring, Lynne helps parents to understand their child’s rights to appropriate interventions and education. She is the editor of Autism: Asserting Your Child’s Rights to a Special Education. Lynne has presented at many national and local autism conferences including Autism One, National Autism Association Conference, Families for Effective Autism Treatment (FEAT), Autism Society of America, Talk About Curing Autism (TACA) and other autism groups. Since 2004 she has been a chapter coordinator for Talk About Curing Autism of Visalia and Fresno, California. Lynne is also the Elizabeth Birt Center for Autism Law & Advocacy’s operations director.
This event is free, however an RSVP is appreciated. |

Bikram Yoga Silverlake is now offering a donation class at 12 noon on Saturdays to benefit TACA. It’s a great opportunity to help in the fight against autism and a great deal on a yoga class. There is a $10 minimum donation for this limited-time class. This class is CASH ONLY; no class packages, credit cards or checks will be accepted. All proceeds got to TACA. For anyone not familiar with the studio, Bikram Yoga Silverlake offers almost 40 classes a week in a clean, nurturing environment with compassionate, knowledgeable teachers. The yoga is done in a heated room to warm muscles, prevent injury, allow a deeper workout, and to flush the body of toxins. Come stretch, sweat and sculpt your body at this friendly, neighborhood studio; all levels are welcome. 3223 Glendale Blvd., Atwater Village, Los Angeles 90039, 323-668-2500.
