Social Skills Training: A New Perspective on Teaching Social Skills

  • RBCPC is on a large church campus. We meet in the Lower Fireside room. Park in the lower (southern) parking lot for best access to our meeting room. Lower Fireside is DOWNSTAIRS in the main church building.

Speaker: Marianne Bernaldo, M.S., BCBA, Director of ABA Programs at Xcite Steps

Overview: Discussion of what is the most common way to work on social skills training for children with ASD, what is in the current literature, and where social skills training is headed in the future.

Marianne Bernaldo has been in the field of Autism and Behavior Analysis for over 12 years. She graduated from UCSD with a B.S. in Psychology and worked at the Autism Research Lab, where she was educated and trained in Pivotal Response Training. Upon graduation, Marianne started working at a San Diego based ABA agency where she worked her way up to a Program Director position where her job duties included providing BCBA supervision to supervisory staff, completing Functional Behavior Assessments, providing parent training, overseeing several social skills programs, and supervising a wide range of ABA cases from various funding sources. Marianne has experience with clients ages 15 months up to 20 years of age and is additionally trained in TEACCH, PECS, Discrete Trial, play and social skills, and shadow aide facilitation. Marianne has a Master’s Degree in Counseling from Cal State Fullerton, is certified in Levels 1 and 2 of Pivotal Response Training, and has been a Board Certified Behavior Analyst since 2009. Marianne is currently the Director of ABA Programs at Xcite Steps where she oversees and manages the supervisor in training program, all of the social skills club programs, and the ABA social skills research program. In her spare time, Marianne is an active member of the Mission Valley Sunset Rotary Club where she is currently a charter member and Club secretary and participates in various volunteer projects across San Diego.

How TACA Helps San Diego Families

TACA does not charge admission to the meetings, nor does it assess annual membership fees for families it supports. Meetings feature:

  • Free TACA Autism Journey Guides (over 750 pages of collective knowledge gathered from experienced paraprofessionals and parents) are offered to all parents who are attending their first Chapter meeting.
  • Speakers on topics ranging from traditional therapies, integrated medical treatments, education, and legal support.
  • TACA's Parent Mentors - one-on-one access to experienced families who have successfully navigated the challenges of finding appropriate treatments and educational opportunities for their children, and who receive additional education from TACA's Foundation Office.
