Description
This session offers a deep dive into PANS (Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome) and PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcus)—two underdiagnosed conditions that can cause sudden and dramatic changes in a child’s behavior, mood, and functioning.
Attendees will learn:
- The difference between PANS, PANDAS, PITAND, and autoimmune encephalitis
- Key signs and symptoms, including acute onset OCD, severe food restriction, tics, bedwetting, regression, and emotional lability
- Common infectious and non-infectious triggers—such as strep, mycoplasma, Lyme disease, mold, and environmental factors
- Diagnostic red flags and physical exam clues (e.g., piano-playing fingers, handwriting changes, urinary symptoms)
- What labs and cultures can—and cannot—reveal
- How to track infections, investigate immune responses, and avoid misdiagnosis
- The importance of ruling out vector-borne disease, mold toxicity, and yeast overgrowth, especially in gradual-onset cases
This session empowers parents to recognize the signs of PANS/PANDAS better and take informed steps toward diagnosis, treatment, and recovery, especially when behavioral symptoms appear suddenly or dramatically worsen.
