Talk About Curing Autism (TACA), a national nonprofit organization founded in 2000 that helps families living with autism navigate the many challenges they face, was honored to be the benefactor of the Huntington Beach Police Officers’ Foundation (HBPOF) 12th Annual Constable Classic Charity Golf Tournament. HBPOF raised $51,500 in support of the more than 4,500 families TACA serves in Orange County.

Nancy and Leo Byrne, Huntington Beach residents, are deeply grateful to HBPOF’s support for TACA. Their son, Declan was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) at the age of two.

“In the beginning, we knew no one in our shoes. Then when we went to our first TACA family event and we didn’t get stares for Declan’s meltdowns, hand flapping and darting. We received kindness and acceptance. TACA is our resource for doctors, information, guidance, friends and most importantly, hope. My family and I are deeply grateful to the HBPOF’s incredible support. They are not only helping my family. They are also giving a lifeline to so many other families living with autism,” said Nancy Byrne.

Founded in the same year as TACA, the HBPOF was originally launched to help an officer whose child was seriously ill. As the officer struggled with medical expenses not covered by insurance, the HBPOF came to his aid at a critical time. The foundation has now grown to assist families of fallen officers, support youth activities and non-profit organizations.

Dennis Hashin, HBPOF Chief Financial Officer and a founding member, is committed to the foundation’s focus to support officers’ families and non-profit organizations meeting the needs of the community.

“I’m proud of the work HBPOF has done to raise funds to help family’s like the Byrnes. For 18 years we’ve worked hard to help those in need. We’re staying the course and will continue to support our community,” said Hashin.
