President Obama Signs Combating Autism Reauthorization Act (CARA) Into Law

press_release_default_photo

Today, President Obama signed the Combating Autism Reauthorization Act into law, extending much needed federal support for autism research, treatment and services for an additional three years.  The Combating Autism Act was originally introduced in 2006.  Today’s action provides an additional $693 million towards combating autism, which affects more than 1.5 million people in the United States.

TACA applauds the efforts of everyone involved in reauthorizing this important piece of legislation.  Families living with autism face enormous challenges, and it is our sincere hope that the funds allocated today will be used to provide Real Help Now to families through effective treatments and services, as well as continue research into the causes of autism, including all possible environmental origins.

A better understanding of the causes of autism will lead to increasingly effective treatment and prevention strategies, the only way to slow the epidemic rise of autism spectrum disorders.  Until such time, TACA will continue to educate, empower and support families living with autism.  Through programs designed to provide Real Help Now, TACA strengthens the autism community by connecting families and professionals, and decreasing the cycle time from autism diagnosis to effective treatments.
